Drum starters are built with smooth sheet steel or radiator oil containers according to the respective starting conditions. The starter is actuated with a handwheel in manual operation and with a geared motor for automatic drive. These starters equipped with contacts for continuous operation. Remote control is possible for the auomatic driven version.

Description
Remarks:
Signals "Start" (X1-9/10) and "Stop" (X1-8/11) have to be active until the corresponding end position is reached. If it is necessary to change the preset starting time, read the operating instructions of the freqeuncy converter attentively.
This example diagram belongs to type ADO 3 - 100 and ADO 4 - 100
The three-phase drum starters are suitable exclusively for starting three-phase slip ring motors. The starters can be used for up to 410 kW under full load.
When actuating the handwheel or the switch of the auxiliary motor, starting will be done by short - circuiting the resistances by means of the switch drum and the contact fingers. The starting resistor will then short- circuited unsymmetrically and intermittently. The terminals of the rotor lines are short-circuited in the limit position. These connections and contacts are designed for continuous operation. Cooling and dissipating the heat generated when starting occurs via the oil.
The three-phase drum starter includes oil box, sarting resistor and switch drum with actuating members. The oil box is a welded steel sheet metal structure. The oil is drained from the oil box via an oil drain plug.
Starting resistor types ADO 5 to 7 are made of freely suspended resistance wire spirals but types ADO 3 and 4 of spirals wound onto ceramic cylinders. A switch drum with sliding contact fingers is used as the circuit element. The starter is actuated by hand via the handwheel or by a gear motor in case of automatic drive. Safe arresting of the individual switch positions is reached via an arresting facility. The appropriate switch position can be seen at the handwheel or at the pointer arranged at the switch drum shaft. All starters are equipped with zero and final position interlocking contacts. In addition, starters with motor drive are provided with an auxiliary contact which operates the main contactor or, if necessary, an auxiliary contactor.
Transformer oil should be used as oil filling which must cover all parts fully which may generate heat or switching arcs. The oil level can be checked at the oil sight glass. The rotor line is inserted in the terminal box by means of cable end boxes or a screwed cable connection. These are also provided for auxiliary or control lines. The terminal box is closed by a sheet metal cap. All auxiliary and control lines of starters with motor drive are accommodated in a commons switch box beside the motor attachment.
In order to ensure proper heat dissipation, the three-phase drum starters should be arranged so that a clear distance of 0,3 m is kept at all sides. Depending on the field of use and the conditions of opera tion, the starters should be maintained at regular intervals. To do so loosen the cover screws and disconnect the connection. Now the complete switching insert can be taken out of the oil box.
When doing maintenance work check the copper contacts of the contact fingers and the copper lining of the drum for wear and burning off. Remove blowpipe beads. Clean burnt off points, replace defective copper linings and contacts by new contacts. Check the 3 mm stroke of the contact fingers by turning the drum, re-adjust, if necessary, by means of the set screw. Use the square (width across flats 22 at the shaft end above the switch position indicator ) for actuating the drum of starters with motor drive. Ensure free motion and good springing of the contact fingers. The oil level must always be visible at the sight glass. Top up transformer oil, if necessary, at the filler neck provided in the cover. Maintenance work should not be done unless the starter is disconnected from the mains completely.
